My short stories are worlds apart from my inspirational romance novels. My short stories are slice-of-life glimpses into the human condition. Human dignity prevails in them. Here are a few that are free to read.
I wrote this story in 2010 after a former colleague reconnected, only he was a she. The change challenged me. The friendship was deep enough for frank conversations, which we had. We lost touch again after a while. Later, he de-transitioned and stopped taking hormones. Ill health claimed him a few years ago. The world lost a good, kind-hearted man. This story belongs to a loosely threaded collection that consists of a handful of stand-alone chapters that share a setting. Some day I will get back to the larger work. Link to story: https://gerribauer.com/fertile-ground
With apologies to Flannery O'Connor ... I started this story years ago and returned to it in 2020. Inspiration came from a news story in which a family with a young child took in, temporarily, an accused pedophile. I've don't know the outcome of that situation. Certainly, it wasn't what played out in my imagination in this story. Link to story: https://gerribauer.com/ode-to-flannery-oconnor
